The fireplace mantel is the natural centerpiece of a living room, and during the holidays it becomes the heart of the whole house. It’s where stockings hang, where family photos get taken, and where everyone gahers on cold evenings. Don’t have a mantel? Neither do I. But I use this method for my Console Table that is under my hanging Television. Which looks absolutely amazing!
A beautiful mantel just takes the right layers in the right order
Clear It Completely
Start with a blank slate. Take everything off the mantel, including the everyday decor. This gives you a fresh look at the space and keeps your holiday design from feeling cluttered.
Start With Garland
Garland is the foundation of almost every great holiday mantel. Choose a full, lush garland that’s long enough to drape slightly past both ends of the mantel. A thin garland laid flat looks sparse. A thick one with some natural drape looks abundant and expensive. To make faux garland look fuller, layer two strands together or tuck in extra greenery, pine cones, eucalyptus, or berry picks. Shop our garland collection.
Weave in Lights
Battery-operated fairy lights or a pre-lit garland add a soft glow that makes the whole room feel warmer. Look for lights with a timer so they turn on automatically every evening. Lighted branches are another beautiful option. Set them in a tall vase at one end of the mantel for height.
Add Height and Balance
A mantel looks best when it has varied heights. Place your tallest pieces (a mirror, framed art, a large wreath, or tall candlesticks) toward the center or at the ends. Then fill in with medium and small pieces.
There are two ways to balance a mantel
• Symmetrical: Matching items on each side of a center piece. Classic, calm, and formal.
• Asymmetrical: A tall group on one side, balanced by a wider, lower group on the other. Relaxed and modern.
Now Hang the Stockings
Stockings are what make a mantel feel like Christmas. Space them evenly and use matching or coordinated stockings for a polished look. Knit, velvet, and faux fur stockings all feel cozy and high end. Use weighted stocking holders or wall hooks so they stay put. Browse our stockings.
Bring in Candlelight
Nothing beats the glow of candles on a winter evening. Group pillar candles, taper candles in brass holders, or candle lanterns along the mantel. For safety near garland, flameless LED candles give the same warm look without the risk. Find options in our holiday candles and lighting.
Finish the Hearth
Don’t forget the floor in front of the fireplace. A decorative fireplace screen, a basket of logs or blankets, or a pair of lanterns on the hearth ties the whole look together. See our fireplace accessories.
3 Mantel Styles to Try
